We have been learning about the three kinds of environmental issues in Science class: population, resource use, and pollution. What is an issue that people in your community care about? Be Specific. Ask someone in your family or a neighbor. What is a possible solution to the problem? Post your answer this week!

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
There is a tremendous amount of garbage floating around in our oceans. As you found out from the Follow the Water Activity, most of it comes from trash thrown out on the land. Check out this video about the man who discovered the Great Pacific Garbage Patch:


This is also happening in the Atlantic Ocean as well.



Here is an interesting Blog called The Plastic Oceanby a person who is studying the trash in both oceans .

RubaDuck - this site is all about the 29,000 rubber ducks that fell off a cargo ship in 1992.

This 19-year-old came up with a solution to the Plastic Ocean Problem:

Solve the Problem
In the Environmental Issues unit we have been learning about different issues that can affect the environment. In this activity you will choose one of the problems facing the world, research it and present a solution to your classmates using a variety of methods.
  1. Decide which Environmental Issue you would like to research. Look back at the slideshows and videos on this page to give you some ideas.
  2. Research your topic using the internet. Take notes and be sure to write down the names of the websites where you are getting your information.
      • Find facts about your topic.
      • Identify the problem associated with your topic.
      • Find out what people are already doing about the problem.
  3. Develop a question that you would like to answer. Begin your question with "To what extent..." That is a scientific way of saying "how much..." Continue by stating how the action might affect a conclusion.
    • example: If you are researching ways to stop the extinction of the giant panda, you could start your question with "To what extent would moving pandas to a new location help their population recover?" In this example, it is assumed that the action of moving pandas might affect their population.
  4. Answer your own question using information and data from your research to support your conclusion.
  5. Present your solution to the problem. Use information and data from your research to support your conclusion. Share your research, question, and solution in a creative way:
    • poster
    • brochure
    • video
    • slideshow
    • your choice (see me for approval)

Global Climate Change
Global Climate Change or Global Warming (as it is often called) is the long-term change in global weather patterns that may range from decades to millions of years. There is debate as to whether this change in climate is caused by natural processes such as volcanoes erupting and changing sun cycles or if it is caused by human activity. The human activity that is most regarded as a possible cause is the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) which release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This gas acts as a barrier that allows sunlight to heat the earth but does not release it. This is very similar to the way a greenhouse heats up during the day. For this reason, carbon dioxide is often referred to as a Greenhouse Gas. When volcanoes erupt they also emit tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as well.
The consequences of global climate change may be:
  • melting of the the polar ice caps causing sea level rise
  • extinction of species unable to adapt to increased temperatures
  • increase in extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and droughts
Attempts are being made to combat the human influence on global climate change. One suggestion is to reduce our use of fossil fuels for our energy and rely on renewable resources.
